چکیده
When escapee farmed Atlantic salmon Salmo salar interbreed with wild fish, the introgression of maladaptive genes can lower population productivity and alter key life history traits. To date, only a few European studies have compared wild, farm, hybrid under common conditions in isolating influence genetics on survival fitness-related Here, we examined performance experimentally derived fry from 4 cross types (wild, reciprocal F 1 hybrids) during first summer growth at 3 locations southern Newfoundland. Overall was high, type rank order consistent across sites (mean percent recaptured: wild-mother hybrids 26.2% ≈ 26.0% > farm 19.2% farm-mother 12.8%). Wild fish were smaller than though differed less size hybrids. At 2 out sites, larger but had small advantage over fish. Shape differences mainly related to body depth, largest between Wild-mother fewer parr marks other single site, minimal, tended narrowest marks. Overall, these results show that genetic exist for traits among juveniles, even short temporal scales favourable environmental conditions, may contribute patterns reduced feral wild.

Distribution Th e species’ range encompasses Europe, North America, and Green land (1) (Fig.1). Non-anadromous forms occur in Europe in a few land-locked locations in Norway and Sweden, and throughout the Neva/Lake Ladoga system and Karelia regions of Russia. In North America non-anadromous forms occurred throughout most of the species’ historical range, as far west as Lake Ontario, and remain ...
متن کاملEnvironmental and physiological factors shape the gut microbiota of Atlantic salmon parr (Salmo salar L.)
Gut microbes are key players in host immune system priming, protection and development, as well as providing nutrients to the host that would be otherwise unavailable. Due to this importance, studies investigating the link between host and microbe are being initiated in farmed fish. The establishment, maintenance and subsequent changes of the intestinal microbiota are central to define fish phy...
متن کاملDifferences in transcription levels among wild, domesticated, and hybrid Atlantic salmon (Salmo salar) from two environments.
Escaped domesticated individuals can introduce disadvantageous traits into wild populations due to both adaptive differences between population ancestors and human-induced changes during domestication. In contrast to their domesticated counterparts, some endangered wild Atlantic salmon populations encounter during their marine stage large amounts of suspended sediments, which may act as a selec...
متن کاملEnvironmental effects on lipid nutrition of farmed Atlantic salmon (Salmo salar L.) parr and smolt
An experiment was conducted to investigate the effects of temperature, feed fat content and dietary oil source on growth and nutrient utilisation of Atlantic salmon parr (f 19 g). The fish were reared in freshwater at 2 or 8 jC for 6 months at light/dark cycles of 12 h:12 h. Each of four feeds was provided to triplicate groups of fish at each temperature. The feeds were formulated with marine f...
متن کاملIn vitro passages impact on virulence of Saprolegnia parasitica to Atlantic salmon, Salmo salar L. parr
The effect of serial in vitro subculturing on three pathogenic strains of Saprolegnia parasitica was investigated. The isolates were passed through Atlantic salmon, Salmo salar L. parr, and then re-isolated as single spore colonies. All strains caused infection. The isolate obtained from diseased fish served as a virulent reference culture and was designated 'AP' ('activated through passage'). ...
